Book Reviews
Posted on January 22, 2026 in
I have nothing to report on the writing front (the new day job is getting in the way) so let me share with you how other, more productive, writers have dazzled me.
I love everything William Shaw writes and have had a lot of fun rediscovering Iain M Banks. Top of my audible listen list has been Adrian McKinty. I was enthralled by Cold, Cold Ground (narrated by Gerard Doyle) and I listened to all 8 in the Sean Duffy series in quick succession. Is there any joy as great as finding a series you missed first time round? Or anything as miserable as finishing the last book.
I am bereft.
My Goodreads history only shows 15, a fraction of the books I read or listened to in 2025, but all the print books I reviewed were special. I will read anything by the enigmatic Dr Lorraine Wilson and brilliant Jane Jesmond – they never disappoint. Top of my print list this year has to be Ravenglass by Carolyn Kirkby a book that totally blew my socks off and reminded me what great historical fiction looks like when the author is brave enough to defy convention.

I am loading up promising books to take with me on my return to New Zealand.
What are you reading/listening to right now? What would you recommend?
